Chapter 14

Almost the first words out of his mouth were, “I’ll sue.”

“Oh God,” had been Jerry’s response.

They got him some dry clothes and he now sat in a small conference room down the hall from Jerry’s office, dressed like a cowboy. Kevin and Jerry huddled in the hallway outside the room.

“Is he the guy, Kevin?” Jerry was at his eyebrow again. “Please tell me he’s the killer.”

“He’s the guy from the tape. I’m sure of that. I just don’t know if he’s the killer.”

“Oh Christ, Kevin. If he’s not, I’m history. Should we call Pendergrast?”

“Not yet.” Kevin knew that he probably should call Pendergrast immediately. But something held him back. A hunch. There was a lot more to this situation and he wanted to sort it all out before he let the sharks in.

The elevator doors opened and Sheila strode down the hallway, still dressed in her miner’s costume. She was soaked from the rain.

“Mrs. Nelson,” Jerry said. “Thanks for coming—”

“How did you know?” she barked at Kevin, who was taken aback by her tone. “Did he threaten you?”

“Not exactly,” said Kevin.

“Wait until I tell my lawyer about this. You were both witnesses, right? Right? He was a lot closer to me than three hundred yards.”

“Mrs. Nelson,” said Jerry. “I’m not sure I understand—”

Kevin cut him off, quickly reading the situation. “Is the divorce final?”

“No. Almost,” said Sheila.

“He said he’d sue,” said Jerry. “Is he serious?”

“I’m sure,” said Sheila. “He’s a lawyer.”

“Oh, God.”

Sheila turned back to Kevin. Her tone softened. “How did you know about him?”

Kevin put a hand on her arm, gently. “I’ll explain later. Can you wait in Jerry’s office?”

“I guess.”

Kevin turned to Jerry. “Come on.”

“Wait,” Jerry said. “I don’t understand.”

“Just follow my lead,” Kevin said, pushing open the conference room door.

Sheila’s husband, whose name they now knew was Phil Nelson, leapt to his feet, leaning forward on the conference table. “I hope you have some damned good lawyers on staff, Mr. Engle. Because I intend to sue you for assault. And I am a very good lawyer.”

Kevin nodded and sat on the edge of the table. How many times had he done this when he was a detective? He felt the old juice coming back, the interview tactics being dusted off and brought back out of retirement. It felt good.

“Are you sure you want to sue, Phil?” Kevin asked.

Phil slowly turned his head and glared at Kevin. “Why the fuck should I answer anything from you?”

Kevin acted as though he didn’t hear the question. “Sure, you could sue. Perhaps you’d even like me to call the cops. I could do that right now.” He produced his cell phone and flipped it open.

“Yeah. Yeah, why don’t you do that? I’d love to tell the cops about how you chased me and then assaulted me, putting my life in jeopardy on a dangerous roller coaster. You almost killed me.”

“Okay. But, of course, I’ll have to tell them everything. I’ll have to tell them how you’ve been stalking your estranged wife.
